Does Black Coffee Help You Lose Weight?

Plenty of people start drinking black coffee for weight loss after reading that it "burns fat". The research is more modest than that, but it does show some real help.

Caffeine adds a small boost of its own. This page covers the black coffee benefits for weight loss that research supports, how to make it, when to drink it and how much is safe. For the basics, see our guide to black coffee.

Is black coffee good for weight loss?

Yes, a little. A cup of black coffee has about 2 calories, so its biggest help is replacing milky, sugary coffee, which can have 100 calories or more. Caffeine also had a small effect on weight in trials. But black coffee doesn't burn fat on its own; it helps alongside eating less and moving more.

How black coffee helps with weight loss

Does black coffee help in weight loss? In three small ways that add up.

It has almost no calories

Plain black coffee has about 2 calories in a 200 ml cup, according to the USDA. The coffee most of us grew up with is a different story. Cow's milk has about 67 calories per 100 ml (ICMR-NIN figures), and a teaspoon of sugar about 16.

Cup of coffee Calories (about)
Black coffee, 200 ml 2
With 100 ml cow's milk and 2 tsp sugar 100
With 100 ml buffalo milk and 2 tsp sugar 150

Swap two milky cups a day for black and you cut about 200 calories a day. More on the calories in black coffee.

Caffeine burns a few extra calories

In one study, 100 mg of caffeine, about a cup of coffee, raised the calories people burned at rest by 3–4% for about two and a half hours. It's a real effect, though a small one. It won't make up for a heavy meal.

It can help you exercise harder

Caffeine has consistently been shown to improve exercise performance, especially endurance, according to the International Society of Sports Nutrition. The studied dose is 3–6 mg per kg of body weight, about an hour before. For a 60 kg adult that's 180–360 mg. Stay at the low end, since the top is more than India's daily limit.

Does black coffee burn fat?

Only a little, and not on its own. A review of 13 trials with 606 people found caffeine was linked to slightly more loss of weight, BMI and body fat, and more caffeine went with more loss. But the results varied hugely from trial to trial, so nobody can say how much black coffee will reduce weight for you.

There's also no good evidence that any drink burns fat from one part of the body, like the belly. Black coffee works best as one small part of eating a bit less and moving more.

How to make black coffee for weight loss

There's no special recipe. It's plain black coffee, made without sugar. Stir 1–2 tsp of instant coffee into a splash of hot water, then top up to about 150 ml with water just off the boil. Brewed coffee works just as well. For every method, see how to make black coffee.

If it tastes too bitter at first:

  • Use a little less coffee, and add more over a few weeks as you get used to it.
  • Try a lighter roast, which tastes less bitter on its own than a dark one.
  • Cut sugar slowly, from two teaspoons to one, then half, if going straight to none is too much.

When to drink black coffee for weight loss

Timing matters less than the amount, but a few habits help:

  • About an hour before exercise, if you work out, since that's when caffeine helps performance most in studies.
  • In the morning or early afternoon. In one sleep study, a large dose of caffeine disrupted sleep even six hours before bed.
  • Away from meals. India's ICMR-NIN guidelines suggest no tea or coffee for an hour before and after meals, because it can reduce the iron you absorb.

How many cups a day?

India's ICMR-NIN dietary guidelines advise keeping caffeine under 300 mg a day from all sources. That's roughly three cups of brewed coffee or four to five of instant. Drinking more won't speed up weight loss, and it brings trouble sleeping, jitters and acidity. Read about the side effects of black coffee before you add a fourth cup.

Black coffee for weight loss FAQs

Can black coffee reduce belly fat?

Not on its own. There's no good evidence that any drink burns fat from one part of the body. Belly fat goes down as overall body fat does, with eating less and moving more.

Is instant black coffee good for weight loss?

Yes. Instant black coffee has the same near-zero calories as brewed. It has less caffeine, about 50–65 mg in a 150 ml cup against 80–120 mg for brewed, so you can have a cup or two more within the limit.

Does black coffee with lemon or ghee help weight loss?

There's no good evidence that either helps more than plain black coffee, and ghee adds calories. Read more about black coffee with lemon and black coffee with ghee.

The bottom line

Black coffee helps most when it replaces sweet, milky coffee. Keep it under 300 mg of caffeine a day, drink it earlier in the day, and pair it with sensible eating and regular activity.
